Houston County 4-Hers compete at State Shoot

Posted: 9/23/03

One of the many projects available in Houston County 4-H is Shooting Sports/Wildlife Management. Through this project, youth practice target shooting and learn about wildlife through field trips and other educational sessions.

This year, we had five youth participating in the target shooting practices who qualified to compete at the State Shoot in Rochester on September 6 & 7. They participated in two shooting classes and presented their wildlife conservation exhibit in a conference judging setting. For their exhibit, they compiled their findings from a full day of fishing and fun on Lake Winona.

In the standard air rifle competition, 50 youth fired forty shots while standing. Their shots were then combined for a total score and our youth placed as follows:

Cullen Becker, 5th, Cayleigh Snodgrass, 8th, Ethan Welscher, 15th, Elyse Welscher, 30th and Lyndon Becker, 33rd.

The scores of Cullen, Cayleigh, Ethan and Elyse were used for total team score of 467 points which gave them enough points to score 2nd out of eight teams.

The Caledonia youth also competed in the 3 position air rifle competition, which includes shooting ten shots each while standing, kneeling, and prone. Their shots were then combined for a total score. Out of 83 participants, they received the following places:

Cayleigh Snodgrass, 8th, Cullen Becker, 11th, Lyndon Becker, 25th, Ethan Welscher, 28th ,Elyse Welscher, 67th.

The team score was again taken using Cayleigh, Cullen, Ethan, and Elyseís scores, for a total of 430 points, good for 3rd out of thirteen teams.

Congratulations to these five youth for an outstanding showing at the 4-H State Shoot!
