Senior guard Sarah Colleran, who had been held out of action for the Lady Warriors for three games, returned ready to play. She started out hot in the first half against La Crescent scoring 16 of her game high 20 points in the first frame.
Colleran and her running mates would cruise to an easy victory over their neighbor, 72-51.
"I thought we came out and played very well," said head coach Scott Sorenson. "Sarah Colleran stepped up and hit five-for-five three pointers in the first half."
In fact, the team would sink seven threes in the first half and would finish 9-for-15 on the night from beyond the arc.
"That was huge," said Sorenson. "Anytime you can shoot like that, especially when their plan was to shut down our inside game, you have a pretty good chance at the win."
The game was played on Wednesday Dec. 26 as part of the Southeast Minnesota showdown. The action took place in Spring Grove.
Up 38-24 after the half, and with Colleran accounting for exactly half of those first half points, the Warriors would never look back.
They would add to their lead in the second half, outscoring the Lancers 34-27.
Along with Colleran's 20, Aly Meyer added 10 points. Libby Augedahl scored nine points as did Brianna Vick.
Megan King scored six points and Theresa Ellenz scored five. Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Warriors was Cassie Gran and Jenna Burmeister with three points apiece.
"Their game-plan was to shut down Gran," said Sorenson. "It was a solid, all-around effort by everybody."
In the first round of the tournament, Rushford-Peterson defeated Spring Grove, 76-51.
Caledonia faced off against Spring Grove on Friday night. However, due to the New Year's Day holiday, The Argus had to go to press early so information for that game will be included in next week's edition.
Going into the game, Sorenson shared his thoughts.
"We'll be short handed," he noted. (Colleran, Vick and Laquita Becker were all out for that game). "We'll only have eight players eligible to play. They match up well against our guards it could be an up and down game. We are jus hoping to keep up with our stamina."
Look for a complete update on the contest next week.
