No one should be deterred from seeking medical help for themselves or a loved one for fear of going into a debt they can’t afford. No one should be denied essential medical help because they owe money to a doctor, clinic or hospital. No spouse should be saddled with debilitating debt due to medical bills owed for the care of their deceased partner. No one should have their lives ruined due to medical bills negatively affecting their credit rating.

These scenarios and many others are the impetus for the Minnesota Debt Fairness Act, which is included in the Commerce Policy Omnibus bill just passed by the Minnesota House of Representatives. Key provisions of the Minnesota Debt Fairness Act would make medical debt less harmful and more manageable for Minnesotans.
